Love & Death & All of Us

31 August 2024 – Post-COVID yay! we can travel again. But, whoa, what’s going on? World-wide, attitudes to tourists have changed. Some locations are now actively hostile and others are imposing stiff restrictions.

British Columbia still puts out the welcome mat. However, as signage next to the Information kiosk on Bowen Island demonstrates…

Yes, travel isn’t what it used to be – for so many people it has become a checklist – and we are definitely loving some places to death. Many places in Europe are complaining vociferously and either have or are bringing in restrictions.

When you have seen dog pooh bags hanging from trees in the Lake District, and moorland fires probably caused by carelessness, it makes one apprehensive when I read articles about “hidden treasures”. Might be better if they stay hidden from the wildlife point of view.

It is like authorities don’t want tourists anymore, by taking away the freedom from everyone. Most tourists are respectable and take litter away in my opinion.

It seems bad behaviour isn’t the only issue, another big issue, globally, is just sheer numbers — even well-behaved people, in overwhelming numbers, cause problems for a location and its residents
